Tassili n’Ajjer National Park World Heritage Site

Tassili n'Ajjer is a national park in the Algerian segment of the Sahara Desert. Located on a wide plateau in south-east Algeria covering a territory of seventy-two thousand square kilometers.

The Tassili N'Ajjer UNESCO world legacy site covers a vast zone of desert landscape, extending from the Niger and Libyan border territory, north and east of Djanet, to the extent Illizi and Amguid.

The district, with Djanet at its heart, is distinguished by its towering dunes of sand, its sheer-sided canyons and its eroded sandstones forming ‘forests of rock’ – also its old ksars, oases, palm groves, gueltas and natural springs.

The Tassili n’Ajjer mountain range gained world fame after the discovery of ancient rock art in the 1930s. Throughout the years, in excess of 15000 petroglyphs and paintings were recognized, similar to an great number of archeological remains.

With various stone instruments and artifacts, ceramics, burial mounds, enclosures and general habitational remains, Tassili n'Ajjer has furnished archeologists with an abundance of information about life in the region in Neolithic times.
