In Ecuador, This Forest Blooms Brilliantly for Just a Few Days a Year

In the south of Ecuador, the province of Loja sees every year an extraordinary natural phenomenon: an explosion of color!

In just a few days, thousands of trees bloom and filled with bright yellow flowers that covers much of the region.

The small village of Mangahurco, where the highest concentration of Tabebuia chrysantha (tree species responsible for this sight), was unknown in the tourist circuits.

Today, despite its population of 600 inhabitants, its geographical position allows it to see more than 10,000 visitors a year.

It must be said that the visual show is really striking. And the reddish color of the land in the province of Loja only adds wonder to the already extraordinary landscape. But why this region rather than another? Especially when we know that Tabebuia chrysantha, locally called "araguaney", are implanted in many countries of Latin America and Central America like Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Colombia or Peru. The answer is simple: with 40,000 hectares, it is the largest area where the tree with colorful flowers is the predominant species, and therefore where the rendering is most grandiose.

According to the weather, all the trees can bloom in a synchronized way, and so all take colors in two days. This is the case if in the weeks preceding the flowering season, it rains heavily and continuously for several days in a row. On the other hand, if the rains are weak, or if they start and stop, the araguaney will flower each at their own pace. Obviously, the most impressive is to see all colors appear in 48 or 72 hours.
