Bolivian Jaguars Endangered By Chinese Demand For Their Fangs And Other Body Parts

The massacre of animals to harvest parts of them endowed with aphrodisiacs supposedly nourishes a very dynamic market in Asia, and more particularly in China. If the whale probably represents the species hunted for its so-called aphrodisiac parts the best known, because the most decimated, it is far from the only one, since the jaguar is more and more the expenses of this exploitation, especially in Bolivia.

Individuals belonging to this species are indeed hunted for their fangs, which have aphrodisiac properties, and flood the Chinese illegal market.

Considered to be vulnerable, the species panthera onca, protected by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, will encounter a certain danger without regulating its hunting. While a skull of jaguar can sell 8000 euros according to 'Sciences et Avenir', a single jaguar canine can reach 5000 euros in the Chinese market, to serve as a jewel or as an aphrodisiac. 400 jaguar teeth destined for export to China were recently intercepted by Bolivian law enforcement. This number would be very slim in comparison with all those that have already been put on sale.

The skin and sex of the male jaguars would also be sold by the traffickers, in addition to the teeth. The phenomenon is of such magnitude that the Chinese embassy in Bolivia has called in a statement "Chinese citizens living in Bolivia to respect and strictly observe the laws and regulations, both Chinese and Bolivian, against the illegal trafficking of wild animals ".
